Form & Colour I - Total Transformation

Week 2 – 4

Mette L’orange, Charles Michalsen, Anthony Quinn

The spoon always reminds you of people who don't have anything to eat. The food crisis in the countries wealthy with earth goods (oil, diamonds, etc.) can't provide food for their people. It's like having a spoon which is with a hole in it!

Each form has attributes who can be understood by separating them into singular elements. E.g. every detail, material, quality, process and functions. Draw the components that make up your object as separate entities.

Material: plastic, black; Form: thin, arm + bowl; Mass: light;

Magnify the details of the object. Work with observation of the object. Three different approaches:

- Personal details - scratches, that show the life of the thing. Personal history.

- Functional details or details that define the function. The surface form and the volume of the spoon bowl.

- Popular identification signs - language of the consumer & manufacturer worlds.

Draw the profile of the object

Video editing

Week 5

Torkell Bernsen, Svein Inge Solheim, Grim Berge

Task 1 - edit shots into single video clip paralel learning the Final Cut software and editing techniques.

Task 2

During discussion in class one scene from "The Matrix" was analyzed. Using this scene as inspiration and all insights from the analysis we had to come up with our own version. Our version was inspired by the most important and symbolic object in the scene - the pills. The movie followed an alternative scenario what would happen if the greedy Neo would take both pills together.

We worked in groups. Each member was assigned a responsibility to mirror the movie production process. I was responsible for working with the camera and it was the first time when I did filming. During the editing I noticed that the material is insufficient for an interesting cut and this was a lesson for the future - have more material than you think you'll need.

Motion Graphics I & II

Week 6 – 9

Torkell Bernsen, Svein Arne Nesøy

Task 1 - animate a simple geometric shapes together with sound.

We were just starting to learn After Effects so this assignment was to get to know the interface and general tools. I was interested about the possibilities to use scripting and control the animation using some kind of dynamic relationship to sound. This is my attempt to controll the size of the square using the sound waves.

Task 1 - second attempt was more traditional. I did all animation with hands.

The inspiration came from the origami and folding forms. I decided to animate an expanding shape which would change it's direction in connection to sound. Also I used the camera to zoom in on interesting parts of the movement and to reveal the whole image only in the end.

Task 2 - use video material in the animation.

I used a video which I recolored, transformed and remaped time. The result combines video and shape animation. Inspiration for this abstract video was the feeling that came with the sound.

Task 3 - animate the poster which we made for typographic class.

the idea in the poster was to show paths of migrating people using their stories. In the animation I tried to show the story in a dynamic way. Where type animation would symbolize the movement and the risks along the way. There still could be done more work with the transitions and the sound in this video.

Sketching / Drawing - character and characteristic

Week 10 – 11

Arve Håland, Kate Madsen

One part of the course was drawing croquis in class. We were starting with simple drawings trying to capture the most characteristic things of the body and its pose. More techniques to observe and draw were introduced during the course.

Different drawing techniques were tried out in class. In the following pictures the body is modelled using soft strokes to define the suface but not the figure line

Other part of the course was drawing from life. We went to draw ballet dancers during their practice. It was very hard to try and capture the pose and movement. It changes so fast that you have to observe longer and draw from memory. From reviewing group works I understood that very few lines can describe the movement and the mood.

Life sketching continued in other places chosen by us. I was drawing people in the train station, bus stop and other public spaces. The biggest challenge was to try and observe once and then sketch. I concentrated on general sketches of their figures and their movement.

Photography II - Critical commentary

Week 16 – 17

Odd Mehus, Liv Andrea Mosdøl

Task 1 - take two portraits. One using narrow apperture opening and interesting light. The second using wide apperture opening and uninteresting light.

We can see that the first portraite is way more interesting then the second.

Task 2 - take three pictures of the same idea / concept, from most confusing to the most accurate.

I chose to depict the fact how some people don't want advertising in their post. I show pictures from the full picture of the door to the most clear of the postbox and the message.

Task 3 - take a picture of some object highlighting the materials, function, use of aesthetic qualities.

I chose to photograph a handmade object, showing it with packaging, the material and function.

Task 4 - illustrate or comment on a saying.

I chose the saying "The deeper into the woods, the more the trees". I wanted to comment on the fact that sometimes it seems you know everything and take some things for granted. But then sometimes if you try to go deeper, you find that everything is not so simple. I took as example food and the parts it consists from.

Task 5 - take 50 pictures of the same place and select one which is most representative.

I took pictures of a communal garden. I wanted to show the diversity of the garden. I chose the photo where you can see vegetables and flowers growing, people working, a bench for relaxation. Some of the pictures are very crowded and that makes them distracting, but this one remains pleasurable to view. This is achieved by having clearly defined places for different objects.

Task 6 - take picture of a person where anonimity is retained.

I took a picture in the dark where you can identify the situation, the objects but you can't tell who this person is. I think also that this picture has a comment about the youth and internet addiction in it.

Interaction I: Foundations in computational design

Week 18 – 22

Amber Frid-Jimenez, Ben Dalton, Per Aarvik

Task 1 - copy russian constructivist poster using analog techniques changing one element.

I thought I would change the structure of the face by emphasizing the bright future which was promised after russian revolution. The women were given equal rights with men and new everyday life was to be reached.

Task 2 - remap russian constructivist poster to another analog medium.

I remaped the poster to a graffiti using thermo chromic ink. It changes colour under the application of heat. The poster changes colour to show the two sides of the new everyday life reform. It allowed women to be independent, but the new life wasn't so beautiful. They had to work hard and then still care for the family.

We started working with digital medium by exploring how we could create glitch by editing image files. Glitch creates an alternative image by accident. When creating glitch you can not be sure what the end result will be.

The first work with Processing. Create a digital version of a part of El Lissitzky poster.

Programming is based on telling the computer how to draw lines. Prior to getting to programming, we tried the same approach in groups of two. One is telling what to draw, the other is drawing based on the instructions.

We are programming using the same principle - giving computer instructions what to draw.

Task 3 - create pattern using Processing.

From the sketch which was generating a radom figure I created a pattern making sketch. It repeats the random figure across the whole screen.

Workshop: leuco dye-based thermo-chromic inks

Week 19, May 7 – 8

Marjan Kooroshina

Application of Thermo-chromic ink to remap task.
